EVEREST, INC. details the business side behind climbing the tallest mountain in the world. It includes over 100 interviews with Western and Sherpa climbers who have been pivotal in making the top of the mountain accessible—for a fee.
The book includes plenty of statistics detailing the numbers behind summiting Everest over the years and the personal stories of some of those climbers. I resonated with the stories of the real-life individuals who reached great heights and lived to tell the tale, and with the stories of those less fortunate succumbing to the perils of the mountain, reinforcing the dangers of mountain climbing.
WILL COCKRELL does an amazing job of explaining how Mt. Everest went from a feat few could imagine completing to how it transformed into the formation of multiple companies eager to pioneer the guided expedition industry.
Within this overarching narrative is a class battle between those who believe in mountain climbing like a religion and those who pay to reach such pivotal heights with no training or experience. A duality examined from both sides of the aisle.
As someone with little knowledge of the topics covered in this book, I found it to be an interesting read about such a well-known mountain.
